About the trek

Bagini glacier is located in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. It owes it's origin mainly due to persistent precipitation from the surrounding Himalayan giants of Changabang and Trishuli. The river originating from this glacier runs down to finally join the famous Dhauli Ganga near Jumma village. This trek is quite rewarding for the view that it offers with a plethora of 6500m plus peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas on display.

Detailed Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Drive from Haridwar/Dehradun to Joshimath via Devprayag, Srinagar and Karnprayag. Arrangements for your night accomodation and dinner will be made at your arrival in Joshimath. Today is a long day on the road and will take about 9 hours on an average.
  • Day 2: Initially, we take a short drive from Joshimath to a village named Jumma which is also the roadhead for our trek. From here, we follow today's trail which is fairly short for about 3 kms and winds its way through forests upto Ruing village(2800m). We set up camp at Ruing village for today as a short day is good for acclimatization initially.
  • Day 3: Today's hike is about 10 km long. Initially, we follow our trail which continues to pass through forests for about 4 kms after which we embrace a muddy path and reach Dronagiri(3600m) and camp ahead near of langatoli.Today's night accomodation is in tents.
  • Day 4: Today's hike is a little long. We begin early after breakfast and follow a trail that meanders upto a point on the ridge. There is a stark change in the landscape as it changes from forested area to rocky terrain. We continue for a little more time to reach an intermediate rest point at Longatoli. After some well earned rest, we continue along the rocky trail for about 3kms to reach our camping ground which is actually the glacier base camp. We set up our camp here for tonight.
  • Day 5: We make an early morning start from our campsite after breakfast to reach the glacier(4445m) after about 4-5 kms. The path is mainly across a moraine but the reward is unmatched. The stunning view of massive himalayan peaks that one witnesses from here can't be described unless experienced. Some of the peaks that are visible from here include Hathi-ghodi, Rishi Saf minal, Hardeol, Dunagiri and Changabang. After spending some time here, we begin our trek back to reach base camp on the way. This is about 7-8kms .
  • Day 6: We trek from Base camp to Ruing following the same trail used earlier. Total distance today is about 14 km long. We set up camp for tonight at Ruing village.
  • Day 7: Begin our trek after breakfast upto the roadhead at Jumma after which a 45 km drive will take us to Joshimath. Today's accomodation is in Joshimath.
  • Day 8: Drive from Joshimath to Haridwar/Dehradun. End of trek.
