About the trek

This is a short and beautiful trek nestled in the valleys of Garhwal region of Uttrakhand. This trek is relatively unexplored as of now. Although the maximum altitude of the trek touches about 10,000 ft, we get a magnificient view of the garhwal himalayas on the way up. Amongst the prominent peaks are Jaonli, Gangotri1, 2and3, ThalaiSagar, Bhartekuntha, Kedarnath, Kedardong, Satopanth, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Hathi-Ghodi, Ronti peak, Nanda-ghunti, Mt Trishul and Panchacholi. The trek bears cultural importance as pastures along the way were and are still used by villagers as grazing grounds for cattle during the summers. During the winters heavy snow covers the region. There are several shepherd sheds along the way which are constructed using stones and logs of wood with plastic tarps used for cover.

  • Approach 1: Via road: We board a bus from Delhi ISBT for Dehradun which takes approximately 5 hours. From there we take a bus for Karnprayag which takes about 7 hours after which we take another bus for thralli which would take us to our destination in about 2 hours. This distance can be covered by rental taxi as well which are available on a shared seat basis.
  • Approach 2: Via air: A flight can be taken directly to Dehradun after which the road approach must be taken as described above to get to thralli.
  • Approach 3: Railways: Train services can be used to get up to Hrishikesh after which the road route has to be followed to get to Thralli.
  • After getting to Thralli using any of the above approaches, we will camp overnight in the fields of Hermani village( about 7-8 kms from thralli).

The day by day itinerary given below excludes travel time which is 2 days from Hrishikesh/Haridwar/Dehradun/Kathgodam and back so that needs to be kept in mind while planning your visit

  • Day 1: We begin the days trek, which is about 8 km long, after breakfast following a steep trail passing through crop and pasture fields. The plantations vary from several vegetables to grains as well. Starting from a height of about 1800m, we follow a steep trail that enters into a slightly dense forest after some time. Although the way is through the heart of the forest, its quite definitive as many shepherds and locals use it for grazing cattle and gathering wood and herbs from regions ahead. After taking a short rest on covering about half the distance, we proceed to scale essentially a steep height gain that can be broken into 3 sections after which we reach our camping site situated at about 2700m. There are about 3 sheds and ample space for camping with water source nearby. On a clear day, we get a view of the garhwal himalayan range with mamoth 6500m plus peaks on display amongst which Mt trishul and Kamet are the most prominent.
  • Day 2: We begin today’s trek continuing along yesterday’s trail ascending along it for about 4 kms to reach beautiful alpine meadows where we are to camp for the day. From here, we get an extended view of yesterday’s himalayan range with some more prominent peaks being added to what was on display yesterday. This camp site is situated at about 3100m.
  • Day 3: Today’s trek is all about descending what we ascended in the 1st 2 days along the same trail to get to hermani village and camp overnight. With this, we conclude our short and beautiful trek.

Conclusion

Although the recommended season for the trek is during the winters because the snow adds challenge and beauty to it, the trek can be done throughout the year with better view of the Himalayan range during the winters.
